Justice Minister expects fresh legal advice on Shine report

By Ruth O'Connell - LMFM - 13.09.2024 - [IRELAND] - [Public Inquiry] Only nine of the almost 350 men supported by Dignity4Patients have seen a successful prosecution brought against the disgraced former surgeon.

The Minister for Justice Helen McEntee says she expects the Attorney General will deliver fresh legal advice on a 15 year old report by a retired High Court Judge on Michael Shine, as soon as possible.

Only nine of the almost 350 men supported by Dignity4Patients have seen a successful prosecution brought against the paedophile who worked as a surgeon at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda and in private practice in the town.

The Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly recently asked the A-G to examine if the report can be published.

Speaking on 'The Michael Reade Show' this morning Minister McEntee said she expects the Attorney General will complete his review as quickly as he can: "I believe, I think a lot of people believe, that there is information in that that may be of assistance or that survivors themselves should have access to. But that work is underway and I certainly welcome and look forward to the Attorney General briefing us on that and seeing where we go from here.

"So this is not about anybody passing the buck and moving things around. We want to do what is right here and I think that legal advice will help us decide what the next steps could be here".
